Hailey was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at just four months old. She first understood the life-threatening nature of her disease at eight, after reading an article about CF. Instead of feeling afraid, she felt a huge sense of urgency – to support the CF community and to chase her biggest dreams.

Now 32, cystic fibrosis has a constant and significant impact on Hailey’s daily life. Managing treatments, pain, and symptoms has made it difficult to live the life she wants. “Some days I can power through and manage, and other days, the struggle is too great, and I am forced to surrender,” she says. As she grows older with CF, she is now experiencing CF-related diabetes, gastrointestinal concerns, and pain. Navigating all aspects of cystic fibrosis has been challenging not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally, yet Hailey continues to face each day with determination and the support of her loved ones.

Hailey first got involved with her local Walk in Quebec in 2005. At the time, she wasn’t comfortable sharing her personal story with CF, but she was still determined to make an impact. She started small, handmaking bracelets and charms for donations and reaching out to neighbours, friends, and classmates. Each year, her commitment grew, along with her confidence and circle of supporters. Over time, Hailey brought more friends and family into the fold, even running three 5k races to raise funds and awareness. Today, she proudly captains her team, Strong & Salty, which has collectively raised an incredible hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Walk.

Walk Day has always been a moment for the community to come together and while supporting progress in CF. Hailey reminds us that, despite incredible breakthroughs like Trikafta, “it is far from a cure”. Continued research is essential, especially as new complications emerge with an aging CF population.

By participating in the Walk To Make Cystic Fibrosis History, you help support research, advocacy and clinical care for people like Hailey who live with cystic fibrosis.
