Facing off against CF

While the Edmonton Oilers take the ice in the Stanley Cup final this week, the Cystic Fibrosis Canada community is cheering extra loudly for one player in particular. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (or “Nuge” as he’s affectionately known to the Oilers faithful), has used his platform and road to hockey’s ultimate prize to elevate the profile of cystic fibrosis, particularly in his nine-year commitment as honourary chair of the Face Off with CF gala in Edmonton.
Nugent-Hopkins has not only been a key part of the Oilers’ success as the longest-servicing player for over 13 seasons, he’s been instrumental in the Face Off gala. His involvement attracts sponsors, donors and participants and the night always includes an entertaining Oilers’ “hot stove” where popular media personnel converse with Nugent Hopkins, Oilers’ alumni and sports personalities. Just a few months ago, the 33rd annual event raised a record breaking $264,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, helping to support vital research, treatment and care.
At this year’s Face Off, Nugent Hopkins received the once-in-a-lifetime King Charles III Coronation Medal, alongside gala organizer, Stacy Hipkin, for their distinguished commitment to improving lives of Canadians living with this rare disease. Hipkin has been involved with the event for the last 14 years, soon after her son, Carter, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three. The Hipkin family’s relentless dedication to raising funds and awareness for CF have been immeasurable over the years and Carter’s improved health is a direct impact of supporters like Hipkin and Nugent Hopkins.
While the Oilers have remained Canada’s hope in bringing home the cup, the face off that matters most to those with cystic fibrosis will continue to make a difference long after the Stanley Cup is raised. Hopefully by the Oilers. Go Nuge.
